What Do I Need to Know about Using Proctorio in Canvas?

Reading Time: 3 minutes

If you want to use a lockdown browser with your quizzes or exams in Canvas, Proctorio is the answer. It’s not hard to start using it, but there are a few things you need to know.

You (and your students) must use Google Chrome.

Proctorio works through a Chrome extension, so you cannot use any other browser when adding Proctorio to a quiz/exam or when students attempt the assessment.

Before you can add Proctorio to a quiz/exam, you need to add Proctorio to your course and install the Chrome extension.

Adding Proctorio to your course

  1. Click “settings” in your course navigation
  2. Scroll to find Proctorio. Add it to the active navigation by dragging and dropping it or clicking the three dots menu on the item and selecting “enable”
  3. Scroll to the bottom of the page and click “save”

Since Proctorio is enabled at the course level, you will need to follow these steps for each course where you want to use Proctorio.

      Installing the Chrome extension

Once you’ve added Proctorio to your course navigation, click the navigation link. You’ll be directed to a page where you will install the Chrome extension.

After you’ve installed the extension, the Canvas navigation link will disappear. Don’t worry – this is perfectly normal; Proctorio is still installed and ready to be implemented.

You must use specific settings in your quizzes/exams

Once you’ve enabled Proctorio in your quiz/exam settings (by toggling “Enable Proctorio” on in New Quizzes or checking the “Enable Proctorio Secure Exam Proctor” box in Classic Quizzes), you can start selecting the Proctorio settings using the “Proctorio settings” tab at the top of the page.

With our version of Proctorio, there are some features not available to us. If you try to enable settings that we do not have, students will be sent to a paywall instead of their quiz/exam.

      Recording Options

Recording options in Proctorio with "Record Screen" and "Record Web Traffic" turned on.

Cedarville’s version of Proctorio includes both screen and web traffic recording. You can choose to enable one or both of these for your assessment. Do not enable the record video, record audio, or record desk settings – those are not included or available.

      Lock Down Options

All lockdown options are available to you, and you can choose which you want to use with your assessment.

Lock Down Options in Proctorio settings with some settings turned on. All options are available for instructors to use.

      Verification Options

Turn off all settings under Verification Options.

Verification Options in the Proctorio settings. All options are turned off.

      Proctorio Behavior Settings

Expand the Proctorio Behavior Settings section and scroll to “Proctorio Exam Metrics.” Turn off all exam metrics, focusing especially on the computer based abnormalities and the technical abnormalities.

      Saving your settings

Now that you’ve defined your Proctorio settings, you can save them to your profile and set them as your default settings. Proctorio will automatically apply your default settings to your quiz/exam when you add Proctorio to the assessment, but you can always go in and change things if you need to.

Click the “Create new profile” button at the bottom of the Proctorio settings and give it a name. The first time you save a profile, it will automatically be set as the default – but if you create a second set of settings, you can change your default to be those instead.

I’ve followed the instructions, but something went wonky. Help!

If your students see a paywall instead of their quiz/exam…

…they need to stop and contact you. They should not pay to take their quiz/exam. Double-check your quiz/exam settings to make sure something extra didn’t get accidentally turned on.

If your students see a message that they need an access code for the exam…

…they need to contact Proctorio Support by scrolling down and clicking the “Start Live Chat.”
