Now that you have some Kaltura context from our Intro & Terms post, we’re going to talk about how to add videos to Kaltura. We’ll cover uploading videos to your Kaltura library, transferring videos from OneDrive, linking YouTube videos, and adding from a mobile device.
Uploading Videos to your Kaltura Library
Log in to Media Space (video.cedarville.edu) or go to My Media in your Canvas course
Click “Add New” then “Media Upload”
Add a video by dragging and dropping it or clicking “Choose a file to upload.”
As the video uploads, you will get a screen to add video details.
- Add a name and description. Those are the most basic pieces you need to add in order to continue.
- Choose a publishing status. For the majority of videos, we recommend starting with ”unlisted.”
Once you click “Save,” the video will appear in My Media along with any other videos you’ve uploaded. You can return to this library by clicking “Go To My Media” or by clicking “My Media” in the dropdown menu under your name on the top right of the screen. These videos are also accessible via the My Media link in your Canvas course navigation.
There are other features on this “Upload Media” page, but we won’t go in-depth on them today. “Tags” can be used to help sort videos, “Publishing Schedule” can be used to set when the video will be visible, and adding collaborators gives editing or publishing access to other users. Additionally, Kaltura treats the term “published” differently than what you’re used to in Canvas. It’s used in association with different channels, but this is an advanced feature that we’ll save for a different time.
Transferring Recordings from OneDrive to Kaltura
Note: this feature is only available through Media Space. You will not be able to import a OneDrive video in Canvas.
Log in to Media Space (video.cedarville.edu)
Click “Add New,” then “Import from OneDrive”
Click the “Select a File from OneDrive” button, then find the video you want to upload. If you’re looking for a Teams Recording, it will be in the “Recordings” folder in your OneDrive.
Select your file, then click the “Open” button.
As the video uploads, you will get a screen to add video details.
- Add a name and description. Those are the most basic pieces you need to add in order to continue.
- Choose a publishing status. For the majority of videos, we recommend starting with ”unlisted.”
Click “Save.”
When the video finishes uploading, click “Go To Media.”
If you are uploading a lengthy recording, it will take a while to process. However, you can still share it via the permalink or embed the video at this point. Anyone trying to access the video will not be able to view it until it has finished processing.
Sidenote: I did not hit “Save” before I clicked “Go To Media.” You can see that the name and description did not carry over. That’s why the ugly title is there. Be sure to click “Save!”
Adding Videos from YouTube
Kaltura has created an excellent resource going through the steps for adding YouTube videos to Kaltura. Check out their “Link YouTube Videos to Kaltura” documentation for details.
Please note that you can only add public YouTube videos to Kaltura, and these videos cannot then be added to Kaltura playlists.
Adding Videos from Mobile Devices
You can also add videos from a mobile device using Kaltura MediaSpace Go. When you are asked for the site’s address to log in, use https://video.cedarville.edu.
- Kaltura MediaSpace Go for iOS
- Kaltura MediaSpace Go for Android
Now that you have vidoes in Kaltura, you might be wondering how to get them into students’ hands. We’ll be covering that next time in our post all about sharing videos from Kaltura.
In the meantime, if you have questions, please drop them below or email us at ctl@cedarville.edu. We’d love to help you out!
