So far, we’ve covered the current state of Assignments and Discussions in Canvas. This week, we’ll be chatting about (New) Quizzes! It’s been a relatively quiet year for New Quizzes so far – the biggest update we’ve talked about has been the update to the moderation settings. But there are a few exciting things that have either already landed or are on the horizon!
Text blocks in New Quizzes
Have you ever wished that there was an easy way to provide directions or additional information inside a New Quiz? Previously, you could to that through using a Stimulus – but you had to attach questions to it, and it greatly changed how the quiz would display. Now, Canvas has added a Text Block option! When building a quiz (or item bank), simply choose “Text Block” from the options. You’ll then be able to give the text block a title and enter all your content through the Rich Content Editor.
Unlike “normal” quiz questions, a text box title is visible in the quiz itself, so make sure you name it something that you want students to see. Since the RCE is used for text blocks, you aren’t limited to just adding text – you can also add videos or images! Adding text blocks to New Quizzes creates a really cool opportunity to present written content to students and insert quiz questions throughout for (almost) immediate knowledge checks.
Future updates
Canvas does also have future updates planned for New Quizzes as announced on their product roadmap!
Improved usability/efficiency for managing Item Banks (Q3/Q4)
We don’t have any details on what this entails yet – but Canvas says they will be improving usability and efficiency for instructors managing Item Banks!
We’ll be keeping an eye on this and any other potential updates and sharing more information as they come closer! In the meantime, if you want to check out any of our previous posts, check out the New Quizzes tag.
If you have questions about how to implement any of these in your course, please don’t hesitate to email us at ctl@cedarville.edu.
