Reading Time: 2 minutesCanvas is revising how New Quiz moderation works in their April 23 update. Most of the adjustments included here are smaller – Canvas is tweaking some labels in the process of adding additional time for a student. But there is one very important change coming with this update. Instructors will now be able to add additional time while a student is taking the quiz. Previously, if a student was taking a quiz, an instructor was not able to add any kind of time adjustment to it – but now, when on the “Moderate” page, instructors can use the pencil icon while a student is taking the quiz…

Canvas New Quizzes Update: Results Visibility & Adding Time During an Attempt
Reading Time: 2 minutesCanvas is bringing new and updated features to New Quizzes on October 19. In this update, instructors can now define how and when students can view quiz results as well as add time to a student’s ongoing quiz attempt. Quiz results Previously, you could still restrict students from viewing quiz results and feedback in New Quizzes – but it was a permanent restriction (unless you would go and change the setting again). With this update, you can schedule exactly when you want students to be able to view results. You can see all the new options in the New Quiz “Settings” tab under “Hide results from students.”…

Canvas Update to the Update: “Assign To” Feature Is Getting Simplified
Reading Time: < 1 minutePreviously, we talked about how Canvas has added new ways to update the dates for assignments, quizzes, and discussions. This week, we’re going to be talking about that same topic – but about another change that’s coming Wednesday, August 28. After releasing this feature, Canvas realized that there was one factor they missed accounting for across their design process – the ability to quickly view the due dates on the settings pages for assignments, quizzes, and discussions. So they’re fixing that and reverting the settings pages to their previous design. This doesn’t negate any of the other updates they brought with the original “Assign To” update!…

Canvas Update: New Method for Adding or Changing Due Dates
Reading Time: 3 minutesWe’re all familiar with how to change the due dates or availability dates for an individual assignment, discussion, or quiz – you go into the settings, scroll down, and add or modify the dates. Now, if you follow that exact same method, you find a “Manage Assign To” link that slides out a panel where you can update all the information. While this change may seem confusing, it enables Canvas to modify how and where the “assign” feature can operate – and it can simplify the processes we use to work with these dates. With this feature update, you can now update dates directly from the Modules…

Canvas Update: New Quizzes Can Build on Last Attempt
Reading Time: 2 minutesCanvas has allowed instructors to give students multiple attempts on quizzes for a while, but they recently modified this feature. Now, Canvas allows instructors to choose whether a student must re-do the entire quiz in subsequent attempts or if they only need to answer questions they had previously gotten wrong. Accessing this feature This feature is already live in Canvas and can be accessed in the settings page for a New Quiz. Toggle “allow multiple attempts” on, then check the box for “Build on last attempt.” When this feature is enabled, students can reattempt questions until they either get it correct or run out of allowed attempts…

Canvas Update: New Quizzes Rich Content Editor and Hiding Quizzes Worth Zero Points in Gradebook
Reading Time: 2 minutesCanvas is updating New Quizzes once again on June 17. With these updates, the Rich Content Editor (RCE) will now be available to both instructors and students, and instructors can choose to hide New Quizzes worth zero points in the gradebook. Rich Content Editor Canvas is finally enabling the Rich Content Editor in New Quizzes! With this change, the content editor you use everywhere else in Canvas will be what you use as you create New Quizzes – and it’s what students will use when they need to type any answers. Having the RCE in New Quizzes means that all features specific to it will be available,…

Canvas Updates: Accessing SpeedGrader for New Quizzes
Reading Time: 2 minutesIn its May 20 update, Canvas has made it easy to access SpeedGrader for a New Quiz. Previously, you’d have to find the New Quiz in the gradebook or in your “to-grade” list to get to SpeedGrader. Now, you can access it through just about anywhere you can access a New Quiz in Canvas – including inside the build pages for the New Quiz itself! From Canvas modules or the Quizzes/Assignments pages, click the three dots for the quiz and select “SpeedGrader” from the drop-down. From both the New Quiz overall settings page and the “Build” page where you can edit the quiz questions, you…

Canvas Update: Grade by Question in SpeedGrader
Reading Time: 2 minutesWith the update releasing April 15, Canvas is adjusting how instructors can review and grade New Quiz questions in SpeedGrader. Previously when scoring questions that needed manual grading, instructors could only view results organized by student. Now, Canvas will allow instructors to flip between students to grade by question. This is controlled by a setting in the “options” menu when you’re in SpeedGrader for a New Quiz. Turning on grade by question When in SpeedGrader for a New Quiz, click the settings gear at the top left, then click “options” in the menu. In the window that pops up, check the box for “grade by question,” then…

Canvas Update: New Quizzes Show in To-Grade List for Manually Graded Questions
Reading Time: < 1 minuteCanvas has updated how New Quizzes function when they contain at least one manually graded question (short answer or essay questions). Previously, the quizzes would not show up in an instructor’s “to-grade” list, and students would automatically see their grade for the quiz – a grade that didn’t take into account the questions that needed to be graded by the instructor. New Quizzes will now be listed in an instructor’s “to-grade” list inside Canvas to make it obvious there are questions that need their attention. Additionally, students will not see their grade for the quiz until after the manually graded questions are marked. Questions? We’d love…

Canvas Update: New Quiz Fill in the Blank Question Type Modification
Reading Time: < 1 minuteCanvas has updated one of the New Quiz question types. With this change, it’s easier to create fill-in-the blank questions. Previously, you had to type all your text then highlight specific words or phrases and hit “enter” to create blanks. With this update, you can easily mark the blanks as you go. Each fill-in-the-blank answer needs to be surrounded by backticks (just above “tab” on your keyboard. It took me way too long to find it since I don’t use that key frequently). Once you have your blanks marked, you can choose the answer type (open entry, dropdown, or word bank) for each blank. These types…
