Canvas New Quizzes Update: Results Visibility & Adding Time During an Attempt

Reading Time: 2 minutes

Canvas is bringing new and updated features to New Quizzes on October 19. In this update, instructors can now define how and when students can view quiz results as well as add time to a student’s ongoing quiz attempt.

Quiz results

Previously, you could still restrict students from viewing quiz results and feedback in New Quizzes – but it was a permanent restriction (unless you would go and change the setting again). With this update, you can schedule exactly when you want students to be able to view results.

You can see all the new options in the New Quiz “Settings” tab under “Hide results from students.” Here, you can select whether Canvas should display the student responses (and which attempts to show responses for) as well as if Canvas should show that the response is correct or incorrect. For both of these settings, you can set a date and time to show the results and another date and time to hide the results.

Very important note: These dates will NOT be adjusted when copying the course to a new semester and shifting dates. If dates for showing and hiding results are used, they must be manually updated each semester.

Add time to a quiz attempt

Canvas is also now allowing instructors to moderate a New Quiz and extend the allowed time while the quiz is happening. This is completed in the same way as adding this type of accommodation before a quiz is started.

Additionally, Canvas has moved where you can add course-wide accommodations for a student. Previously, you would click the pencil icon in the “Moderate” column for a student to set course-wide accommodations. Now, you simply have to click the student’s name on a New Quiz “Moderate” page to access these settings.
