Canvas is revising how New Quiz moderation works in their April 23 update. Most of the adjustments included here are smaller – Canvas is tweaking some labels in the process of adding additional time for a student. But there is one very important change coming with this update. Instructors will now be able to add additional time while a student is taking the quiz.
Previously, if a student was taking a quiz, an instructor was not able to add any kind of time adjustment to it – but now, when on the “Moderate” page, instructors can use the pencil icon while a student is taking the quiz to add extra time.
Additionally, the design of that “edit accommodation” tray has been modified. Previously the tray was labeled with the student’s name. With this update, the tray is labeled “In Progress Accommodation” to clarify what the settings are for, and the student’s name has been moved to the body of the tray. Canvas has also added a clarifying statement that the settings adjusted here will apply to the current and any future attempts (if applicable) by that student.

Canvas also adjusted the design of the pop-up for changing the accommodations for a student course-wide. When you click on a student’s name in the “Moderate” page for a New Quiz, you have the options to adjust the time for a student (giving a set amount of extra time, changing a timed quiz to unlimited, or adding a multiplier for the time). Previously, this pop-up was titled with the student’s name. With this update, Canvas is changing the title to “Student Accommodation” to clarify that these changes apply course-wide and has moved the student’s name to the body of the pop-up.

These changes will automatically be available in your Canvas courses April 23, 2025. If you have questions about the details of these changes, reach out to Canvas support (the “Help” menu in Canvas is an easy way to contact them!).
