Beginning of the Semester Reminders and Tips

Reading Time: 2 minutesWelcome to the start of a new semester! Today we’re going be chatting about some tips and reminders to make the first week (and the rest of the semester) easier. We know there’s a big gap between semester starts, so it’s easy for some of these things to slip your memory.   Combining Canvas sections  You may be teaching multiple sections of the same course but want to combine all your students into one section so you have a single place to work on the course. Canvas makes it simple to combine those multiple sections into one. A brief note: you’ll need to combine them before students submit…

How Can I Quickly Adjust Multiple Canvas Assignment Due Dates and Times?

Reading Time: 2 minutesPreviously, Canvas has made it easy to adjust due dates for all assignments in a course. You’d go to the assignments page, click that little “three dots” icon in the top right to expand a menu, and select “Edit Assignment Dates.” Canvas would display all assignments from the course and any dates associated with them currently. From there, you could either manually change dates or use the checkboxes and “Batch Edit” button to update multiple dates at once.   But with these, you were stuck with whatever times were associated with an assignment. And if there wasn’t a time associated with an assignment, Canvas would default it…

Three Tips to Start Your Semester Strong

Reading Time: < 1 minuteWelcome back! We’re about a week into the spring semester already – time flies! Across this semester, we’ll be digging deeper into Canvas features, offering tips, and sharing educational best practices as well as information shared by your colleagues. But today we’re going to pause and review a couple tips to help you start the semester strong.  1. Be aware of Canvas Announcements and use them Announcements allow you to communicate quickly and easily with your students. Sending an announcement is the best way to get in contact with your entire class in one fell swoop (and it doesn’t entail making a list of email addresses). For…

How Can I Send a Piece of Course Content to Another Course or Instructor?

Reading Time: 2 minutesHave you ever been working on a course and realized there was a piece of it that you wanted to use in another of your courses? Or has another instructor asked you for a piece of content and you were left with trying to figure out the best way to get it to them?   Canvas has a feature that makes this easy. When you want to transfer a single item (or a few items), you can use the direct share feature to copy or send the item. These two options function a little differently – one sends the item to a user, while the other copies it to…

How Do I Update the Formatting for my Course Objectives in my Syllabus?

Reading Time: < 1 minuteIn our last post, we talked about how to transfer your course to your spring section while keeping in mind the autosyllabus template. Most of the information in that post is still accurate – but the template formatting for the course objectives has changed. Instead of housing the objectives in the “Outcomes” page and directing students to view them there, the objectives are now included directly in the syllabus.   If you didn’t bring over your syllabus from last semester, the syllabus in your spring section will have the correct objectives formatting! You’ll want to use that spring syllabus template as you work on your course. It’s easy to copy and paste the specifics from your fall…

How do I Transfer my Course with the Canvas Syllabus Template?

Reading Time: 2 minutesWe’re getting closer to the time to prep for next semester’s courses. With the Canvas syllabus template, you may be wondering how it’ll work to bring your courses over and if you’ll need to recreate your syllabus in your new section. Thankfully, this is not the case! There’s a slightly different process to follow if your syllabus is already in the Canvas template or if you still have it in an earlier format. Let’s take a look at each of these.   If your syllabus is already in the Canvas syllabus template  You’re in really good shape! Since the template hasn’t been updated, you can copy your entire course over to…

How Can I Import My Course Content without Overriding the Autosyllabus?

Reading Time: < 1 minuteCedarville is launching an “autosyllabus” this fall – a syllabus template that’s pre-loaded into your course sections. This syllabus will have some sections pre-filled, but there are others where you’ll need to add the necessary information. Since the syllabus is already loaded in your fall section, you’ll need to remember that so you don’t override it when you bring over your course content.  So how do you bring over your course content without overriding the syllabus?  Canvas will then process the import and bring over the content.  If you have already brought over your course content and accidentally overridden the autosyllabus, it’s okay. Delete all the…
